- A new book on OODBs is currently being planned, to be edited by:
-
- Mary E.S. Loomis PhD, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, USA
- and Akmal B. Chaudhri, City University, London, UK
-
-
- Target audience
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- The target audience includes users or potential users of OODBs. The book
- will contain contributions by users and practitioners for users and
- practitioners. People will be able to use this book to judge whether OODB
- technology is suitable for them.
-
- Topics of interest
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- The topics of interest may include (but are not limited to):
-
- * Tips and tricks using particular products
- * Comparisons of products
- * Use of products for particular applications (case studies)
- * Management issues in adopting OODBs
- * Use of OODBs with ORBs
- * Use of OODBs with Relational systems (including Gateways)
- * Tradeoffs between alternative OODB application designs
- * Tradeoffs between alternative OODB languages bindings for application
- development (e.g. Smalltalk vs. C++)
- * War stories
- Etc.
-
- Products of interest
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- Pure OODBs:
-
- * GemStone
- * Objectivity/DB
- * ObjectStore
- * O2
- * VERSANT
-
- Object-Relational:
-
- * Illustra
- * UniSQL
-
- Application areas of interest
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- Papers can discuss applications from any industry sector, e.g.
- manufacturing, engineering, financial, telecommunications, etc.
-
- Papers to emulate
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- B. Beck and S. Hartley (1994) Persistent storage for a workflow tool
- implemented in Smalltalk. Proceedings of OOPSLA '94, Portland, Oregon,
- 1994, pp. 373-387.
-
- N. Goodman (1994) An object-oriented DBMS war story: developing a Genome
- mapping database in C++. In: Modern Database Systems: The Object Model,
- Interoperability, and Beyond, W. Kim (ed.) (New York: ACM Press and
- Reading, Massachusetts: Addison-Wesley)
-
- Papers should be 5,000 words in length, previously unpublished and must
- not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Papers of a purely
- academic nature would not be suitable.
-
- Next Move

- (one-two sides of A4).
-
- Submission format
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
